Evaluation Notes

Slide 1:
By looking at my two examples of the NME magazine and conducting primary research, I was able to use the same layout by looking at the front covers as well as using the main conventions in order to create my magazine. By using these two examples, I was able to see what I liked and what I did not liked about this.

I found out that the market wanted a R&B magazine. On my front cover, I was able to follow the conventions of having a selling line, which is placed at the top of the magazine, the masthead, which is in a large font in order to stand out, as well as having the date and issue number of the top right third which is challenging the forms and conventions of real media products as they are either on the barcode or underneath their masthead, as shown as before. I was able to have a main image so then it can attract customers as shown in the Lily Allen magazine. The denotation of this image is two girls standing outside looking straight into the camera, whereas the connotations of this image is that girls both look innocent as they as both looking straight to the camera as well as being a mid-shot angle. I have also included the conventions of having a main cover line as well as other cover lines, so then readers are able to skim read what the magazine features. The cover lines which I have included as all the same size except for the main cover line, as well as being direct and informal. I have used a colour scheme of white blue as this connects with the main image due to the different colour scarves.

For the Table of contents, I followed many conventions, as I inserted the magazine name at the top, including the masthead of ‘Contents’, so then readers are aware what page they are looking at. I also added the image of the magazine’s front cover, as this is a main convention in which music magazines uses. Furthermore, I also assed an editorial pillar as well as an image of what the magazine will feature. I also, added three editorial pillars to group my cover lines, as stayed in the colour scheme of blue and white as followed on from the front cover.

Slide 2:
In my double page spread, I was able to follow some main conventions, such as placing a slug on the top right corner, so then readers can skim through the pages so they are able to find out the correct page. I have also added a pull quote and placed it between my body text of the interview with the new girl group. The body text is the main feature of this and have not added a lot of information in as I did not want to bore the readers. After the interview, I added another convention which was the anchor, to inform readers that it is the end of the interview and show other information about the girl group to inform the readers. Furthermore, I added images to the double page spread, which relates to the interview. Therefore, another convention which I used was that I had an article title and had a leading text underneath it, to give readers a sneak preview about the article.

Slide 3:
Thus, by creating my music magazine, my media product represents different particular social groups;

Denotation; you are able to see two girls looking straight at the camera,
Connation; the girls and the colours that they wear, can represent how simple innocent they look.
Mise en scene; this image is taken outside, near a building, both girls are wearing neutral colours, white and blue, which I was able to use constantly throughout the front cover
Age; the magazine created can attract teenagers both males and females who are interested in R&B music
Lifestyle; the target market of teenagers both males and females may still be at school or college

Slide 4:
IPC Media is mostly magazines which compromise a wealth of leisure brands, therefore will not use this.
National Magazine Company publish the most well established magazine including Good Housekeeping; therefore will not be suitable for Flava.
Future Publishing is an international special interest media group whose magazines include Total Film, T3, thus will not be suitable for Flava to use.
Bauer Media includes a wide range of interests including Heat, Grazia, Closer, and FHM. By using Bauer Media, this will be suitable for Flava as this publisher does not produce any R&B magazine and therefore will not clash with any other magazines in the publishing industry.

Slide 5:
As mentioned before on question two, the audience for my media product will be both males and females, generally teenagers, between the age of 11-17. It will attract the audience who are into R&B. From creating this music magazine, this will attract the social group B to D, as the target audience is teenagers therefore will be unemployed and unskilled. This target audience will be attract to this magazine, as by looking at the front cover, it shows how neutral it is due to the colour used, as well as having information about different R&B artists which will attract both males and females.

Slide 6:
When creating my music magazine, I was able to inform my audience about what the magazine will consist of. On the front cover of Flava, I was able to insert four cover lines including a main cover line, which will attract readers to this magazine. In this magazine, there are a variety of editorial content, as there are interviews, music reviews as shown on the table of contents. The double page spread which I created was an interview about a new girl group called Pretty in Pink. The address of this double page spread is direct as it is directly focused on the girl group. Thus it is in-between both formal and informal content due to the fact that this is an interview about themselves, therefore no colloquial language is used. I have kept the colour scheme consistent throughout as well as having the same fonts, in order to stand out.

Slide 7:
From the process of constructing this product, I was able to use a variety of technology, which includes Adobe Photoshop, Blogger, Excel and Word.

By using Microsoft Word, I was able to conduct primary research. I was able to create a questionnaire in which I was able to find out research about creating my music magazine. From conducting this questionnaire, I was able to find out what the audience wanted and from this be able to use this information to create my music magazine. I asked participants around eight different questions which will help me come up with a music magazine, which included colour schemes, fonts, magazine names and many more.

After conducting my questionnaire, I was able to use the software of Microsoft Excel. In Microsoft Excel, I was able to create tables from the results from conducting my questionnaires, thus being able to create graphs, so then it made it easier to compare and analyse from. Creating both graphs and questionnaires, I was able to come up with a final analysis of creating an R&B magazine, using the Whoa! font and the colour scheme of blue and white, which linked in with the main image that I had used on the front cover.

A technology software which I was able to use was Adobe Photoshop. Adobe Photoshop helped me edit existing photos as well as new ones. For my front cover image, I was able to use the Gaussian blur which gave the image a more distort look, thus being able to rub out the main image to make the background faded out to make the image stand out more for the readers. Also, I was able to use the grid, to be able to move different cover lines, masthead, dateline, barcode, issue number and images to make them aligned thus making it look more professional. For my table of contents, I was also able to use the grid to align cover lines, editorial pillars, heading to make it aligned.

Furthermore, I was able to use the magic wand tool to remove the background from one image of the girl group. Therefore, I inserted the image on the table of contents with a white background. For my double page spread, I also used the grid to align information as well as inset an image and an article title on the page. Finally, I was able to create an advert for Nike, which I used a lot of tools for, I was able to use the shift button and make the image more bigger, as well as using the magic wand tool to remove the background in order to have a white background. I was also able to insert an image of the Nike tick and slogan and cropped it to fit into the advert. Furthermore, on all images which I used, I was able to use the Clone Stamp Tool and the Spot Healing Brush Tool to removes any marks or blemishes from their faces.

Slide 8:
Slide share is an online website which allowed me to convert my power points and word documents in embed codes which allowed me to publish them on my blog.

To create my blog, I used the website called Blogger. Here, I was able to upload images as well as power points and documents and write about what I did and how I did this. I was able to do this in order, to see how I progressed throughout the course. On Blogger, I was able to follow other peers, thus allowing me to look and analyse others as well as comment if needed.

Finally, I used the website called Issuu, which allowed me to upload my magazine. Before doing this, I first used Microsoft Publisher to insert the order of my magazine. I first inserted my front cover, advert, table of contents and double page spread and save it as a PDF. I then uploaded this on Issuu and automatically created a document on how my overall music magazine will look like.

Slide 9:
By looking back at my preliminary task, I feel that I have learnt a lot more, as I feel more confident in creating my magazine. I have used a lot more tools on Adobe Photoshop, such as the Magic Wand Tool to remove the background from an image thus making it look more eye-catching as I have done on my table of contents.

I feel like I have learnt how to design my table of contents, front cover and double page spread more effectively thus making it look more professional and eye-catching for the readers. Thus, I was able to use a consistent colour scheme on my front cover, making it look more attractive for the audience, therefore, I have improved my alignment on all three pages as I was able to use the grid by clicking on View > Grid.

Overall, Adobe Photoshop helped me a lot to produce my final product, thus it made my media product look more eye-catching as I was able to use a variety of fonts as well as a consistent colour scheme throughout.

Project Plan

Project Plan

As mention before, this is my project plan on how I will plan out how I will create my magazine in a period of three - four months. As you are are able to see, I will first start creating my questionnaire and find out results from this and analyse. As well as this, I analysed two exisitng front covers and will produce a mock up. This was done in the first month as planned. During December, I was able to product as many drafts of my front covers until it suited my needs.

After the christmas holidays, I analysed two exisitng double page spread and create a mock up of my own double page spread. In January, I have created around 5-6 drafts of my double page spread, so then I can make sure that I like it rather than being rubbish. I was able to add all the main conventions on both front cover and double page spread so far. During January, I was also able to create an advert which will feature in my music magazine. In February, we was meant to analyse two exisitng table of contents, however this did not happen, however I was still able to create my table of contents by looking at other magazines.

During the half term, I was able to edit any drafts which I needed to complete. After creating my drafts of my table of contents, I started to create my final copies of my front cover and my double page spread. By March, I had finished everything, including my final copy of my table of contents. Halfway thorugh March, I was able to update my blog as well as create an issu magazine to show my final copy of my music magazine.

After this, this is followed on by my evaluation of my whole project plan of creating a music magazine, which will take place after Easter.

Issuu PDF

This shows the final issue of my music magazine, which includes all of my final drafts of my front cover, my advert, my table of contents and my double page spread.

I was able to create this on issu.com. By using this website, I am able to create the final copy of my music magazine, which will automactically create my magazine. However, before I started doing this, I had to open up Microsoft Publisher, and pasted all my images of the front cover, the advert, the table of contents and the double page spread. After pasting these, on separate sheets but the same document, I had to make sure that they were all the right size by resizing them. After doing this, I made sure that I saved my work, I then printted this by using the PDP creator to create this document.

After this, I went to issuu.com and went to upload. I then browsed for my PDF document. After this, I was sent an email, which told me that my document was done. As this was done, I was able to see the final copy of my magazine. This was then embedded to my blog as you can see.

Therfore, you are able to see the final issue of the magazine as it is all put together to make it look like a real music magazine.

Double Page Presentation

This is a presentation of one of my music magazine analysis. This contains information about the first music analysis I did on the double page spread.

I decided to chose NME, due to the fact that they are an established music magazine brand which everyone has heard of. NME is generally for the indie market as you are able to see from the images. The target market for this audience is people who are into indie/rock/hip-hop music. The type of language which is used in a specific articel found in the NME magazine, is colloquial and informal, as well as being direct.

In this article, I talked about the consistent colour scheme of black, white and red which is constanly used throughout the article as well as the magazine. The style of the text and how the article is laid out. Also, I talked about the eye flow and the main conventions, which I will need to follow in order to create my double page spread.

Final Draft

This shows the final draft of my front cover, my table of contents and my double page spread.

On the front cover, I was able to make changes and edit anything which was needed. I was able to change the colour of the masthead into white, so then it is able to stand out and look more professional to the potential readers who may consider buying this music magazine.

On the table of contents, I was able to change the whole layout of the contents page in order for it to look more eye-catching. I was able to move the editoral pillars on the left and made sure that I aligned this to the main heading. I also added a editorial letter which is a main convention. I also added an image on the right hand corner which I editted by using the 'Magnetic Lasso Tool' to remove the background.

For my double page spread, I was able to make a few changes, which included sizing and font. I also changed the colours of the font and made sure that all the text was readable for the readers, as well as looking eye-catching.

Table of Contents

For my table of contents, I was able to use the cover lines in which I first started from. I used the cover lines from my fornt cover and added a few more, underneath each editorial pillar. I inserted an image of the front cover as this is a main convention in which music magazines use. I also inserted the main heading music magazine name 'Flava' and the 'Contents' so then readers are aware of this. I was also able to insert an image as well as offering readers a subscription offer.

When creating, my table of contents, I was able to follow my mock up, I was able to insert the image of my front cover on the top left third and having the name of the magazine on the contents page. I also put the 'Contents Page' so then readers are able to see what the page is and what the magazine consists off.

However I did not follow all the conventions which I wanted by looking at my mock up. As I did not follow my plan, I changed the whole layout of the table of contents to suit my needs and standards. I was able to insert a slug on the top of the contents page, as I realised this was a main convention in which most music magazines use. I also deleted the word 'page' from the 'contents page' as readers already know what the page is. I have also decided to use editorial pillars so then I am able to place my cover lines underneath the pillars to make it look more professional. I also changed the layout of the editorial pillar and decided to placce it in the right third to make it look more eye-catching.

Underneath each editorial pillar, I was able to insert at least four cover lines which are related to the magazine and the theme of R&B. I then inserted the selling line and placed it at the top right third and aligned it to the left.

Afterwards, I decided to change the positiong of the front cover image and placed it on the right and moved the titles 'Flava' and 'Contents' to the left third. I also moved all the editorial pillars and made sure that they are aligned with the two titles. I also moved the page numbers to the left and aligned them as well. I also changed the editorial letter by changing the font and size and insert the editors name at the bottom.
